TROPOMI Sulfur Dioxide (SO2)

The majority (~70%) of Sulphur dioxide (SO2) enters the atmosphere through human-related activities rather than natural processes. It influences local and global chemistry with effects ranging from short-term pollution to climate impacts. The TROPOMI SO2 product provides real-time data, typically available three hours after measurement, using the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) technique. It involves deriving the effective slant column amount (Ns) through spectrum analysis and converting it into vertical columns using air mass factors. The identification of elevated SO2 levels is crucial for monitoring volcanic eruptions and anthropogenic pollution sources, as volcanic emissions may pose risks to aviation, including volcanic ash.
