The sun-induced fluorescence (SIF) signal emitted by the chlorophyll-a of terrestrial vegetation has been shown to be a closer indicator of vegetation functioning than other variables traditionally derived from optical remote sensing data.
In addition to SIF, TROPOMI can provide reflectance data in the 675-775 nm spectral window, which is an important complement to SIF for the characterisation of vegetation structure and functioning. This configuration makes TROPOMI to be a powerful instrument for global SIF mapping.
